In November 2004 a Pro Business Partnership was set up to involve local businesses in business related issues in Sedgemoor.  As part of this partnership a Work Force Issues group looked at the project and issues relating to employment and skills.  From this EKOS Consulting was commissioned to research the business development requirements for Bridgwater.  The aims of this research were to identify the potential growth sectors to attract to Bridgwater; identify the potential requirements for growth sectors for incubator units, managed workspace etc; identify the support service offer and associated services required to serve both incoming and local start up and expanding businesses in the growth sectors; and identify the current employment related training provision in the town that is appropriate for growth sector business.

Business Development Requirements for Bridgwater

The ICT, food and drink, construction and professional services sectors were identified as being key growth sectors for Bridgwater.  It was recommended that priority be allocated to tackling 3 cross sector issues for the area: basic skills, clerical and administrative skills and leadership and management.  The consultants were able to identify demand for some workspace provision but some areas require more specific work.  It was recommended that further research is needed to predict the level of demand for specialised food and drink workspace units and the demand for units for the construction industry.

In terms of support services, generally the sectors are well served by generic support through Business Link and the Somerset Skills Alliance, and specific business support and advice agencies, but there are two specific recommendations.  ICT businesses felt that better advice could be available on land and premises.  In food and drink, there are a range of support bodies but there needs to be clear information on roles and responsibilities.

For local training provision Bridgwater College was praised in its delivery of services, however, there are areas where consultants make recommendations:- tackling cross sector issues in relation to basic skills, administration/clerical skills and leadership and management; for the ICT and professional services sector, considering the viability of offering training in higher level skills.
